Oving Tennis clubRECREATION GROUND
Oving residents are extremely fortunate in having the use of a beautiful, tree lined recreation ground of around three hectares at the heart of the village.
The recreation ground was formerly glebe land but was purchased by the owner of Oving House, Henry Yates Thompson and donated in 1927 to the Parish Council of Oving and its successors “to be used exclusively and in perpetuity for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of Oving.”
Apart from recreation the conveyance allows for sheep grazing but it is a long time since any such use was made of it.
The site has had many informal and formal uses but in particular has been the home of Oving Football Club (founded in 1887), the historic Oving Villages Cup competition (first played in 1890) the Oving Tennis Club (formed before the second war but re-launched in 1993) and up until recently a cricket club.
The original sports pavilion still exists and is currently used for storage. In 1975 a new prefabricated building was erected as a pavilion and is still in use. It provides changing rooms, showers and a small meeting room with tea making facilities.
Children’s play has been an important feature of the recreation ground and parents have from time to time helped to provide equipment for the purpose. The present equipment, the most sophisticated so far, was provided through a mixture of enthusiastic fund-raising in the village and a generous grant from Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN).
The Parish Council runs the facility on behalf of the village assisted by a the Recreation Ground sub-committee which meets twice a year. The constitution of this sub-committee is available on this web site as are the Rules for the Recreation Ground; these can be found by clicking here page and the sub-committee's constitution here.
