HISTORY OF OVING FOOTBALL CLUB
Oving Football Club was first formed in 1887 with one of the founder members being the then rector of Oving the Reverend I Hill who was also instrumental in forming The Oving Villages Cup Competition in 1889, making it we believe the second oldest Village Cup competition in the Country. The Oving Villages Cup was formed by subscribes of the villages within a 12 miles of Oving with Mr James Evans of Oving being the Chief Organiser and acting Hon Secretary and the Rev I Hill the first President.
The founder members of the competition were Waddesdon, Granborough, Quainton, Oving, Long Crendon and North Marston with Long Crendon beating Oving 2 – 0 in the Final. In the first 16 seasons of the competition Oving reached the final on 6 occasions but only managed to win it once in 1908 and did not reach the final again until 1982 losing again to Long Crendon this time 1 – 0.
The Club has competed in Aylesbury & District competitions since the Aylesbury Cup, which was formed as a direct result of the strict rules of the Oving Village Cup, in 1891 before a league was formed in 1895. The next recorded success of the Club was in winning an ADL competition in 1949 before winning the Buckingham Junior Charity Cup in the mid 1960’s beating Grendon Rangers 2 – 1.
Things changed in the 1980’s with the 1st team winning the ADL Premier Division in 1981, for the first time in the Club’s history, as well as the Field Shield, again for the first time, and the ADL under 21 Cup with the reserve team reaching the final of the ADL reserve Cup.
In 1982 they again won the Field Shield, beating Stocklake 2 – 1, in a very enjoyable final on Good Friday with the goals being scored by Cliff Hercules and Neil Pronger.
Three days later in the Final of the Oving Villages Cup at Oving they lost to Long Crendon 1 – 0. That year they also reached the Final of the Marsworth Cup and were losing finalists in the Berks and Bucks Junior Cup at Marlow being beaten by Bracknell Boys Club with the score 4 – 3 after extra time.
Success continued with the team winning the ADL Premier League again in 1983, this time without losing a league match, and won it again in 1984. It was around this time that Cliff Hercules and Neil Pronger both left the Club to join Aylesbury United.
In 1987 to help celebrate the Club’s centenary Oving played a special match against a first team Aylesbury United at their ground, which was then in Buckingham Road, losing 9 – 0 with one of the goals being scored by Cliff Hercules. A special dinner was held at Winslow Hall attended by 150 members and guests where Mr Dick Speake, a life President of The Football Association, gave a speech and handed over to Mr Percy Young a testimonial in celebration of 100 years. This today is proudly on display in the pavilion.
In 1998 the Club reached the final of the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup at Denham but unfortunately lost to Maidenhead reserves.
The Club has had a bit of a freefall since and now only has one team which plays in Division 3 of the ADL.
Mr Percy Young has been actively involved in the Club for approximately 70 years from originally being a player and holding virtually every post to currently being President. He received the Torch Trophy, a major award for services to sport, after being nominated by the Buckinghamshire Playing Fields Association, which was presented by The Duke of Gloucester as well as many other awards. He is also President of the Oving Villages Cup and each year presents the trophies and medals to the finalists on Easter Monday.
